CHAPTER FOURTEEN
-Lanso-
Madame LaBonté lives in a narrow buttercup-yellow shotgun house in the heart of the French Quarter. Her home is one of many to be painted in cheerful and inviting colors. As New Orleans’ oldest neighborhood, the Quarter has an eclectic architectural style, but the overall effect is pretty magical. Like Madame LaBonté herself.
The front door swings open, and an old woman dressed in a long, flowing floral dress steps out onto the tiny porch.
“You’re late,” the soothsayer says.
“I didn’t know you’d be expecting me, Madame,” I say, entering the house once she waves me in. I’ve been here enough times to know she sees her clients in the first room of the house. It’s a small living room packed with a recliner, a love seat, a television that barely fits in the room, and an end table. The walls are the same shade of yellow as the outside. It gives the room a cheerful look.
I’ve asked her in the past, and Madame LaBonté says she keeps the colors happy and light because she often has to deliver bad news. She says it helps ease the pain. Not sure how that works, but I’m just a dragon. I’ll leave the magical stuff to the warlocks and soothsayers.
“The second I heard you and Reznor were in town, I knew you’d come see me. I’m just sad your bond-mate didn’t come. That man has the nicest eyes.”
“You wound me, Madame LaBonté.” I clutch my heart dramatically.
“Oh, you stop that. Sit and tell me what you want. I have a client coming in an hour, and I have to catch up on my stories.” She gestures to the stack of romance novels on the table.
“Why do I get the feeling you already know why I’m here?”
“Because you’re a smart man. Ask me nonetheless. I like it when I’m right.”
I laugh, because Madame LaBonté knows she is always right. She is known throughout the world as a powerful soothsayer. It must drive her husband absolutely crazy.
“He manages to sneak stuff on me,” the old bird cackles. I will never get used to that, how she can essentially read my mind. “Go on, I’m not getting any younger.”
“Right. We went to see a warlock yesterday. He told us that the only way to break the curse is to unbind our souls. I’ll die if we do that.” Madame LaBonté grunts and shifts in her recliner. “Who should we go see to break the curse? Preferably not someone who will tell Rez that I have to die for him to get his mate.”
“Pfft,” she responds, shaking her head animatedly. It makes her gray hair bounce around her face. “You’re asking me where you can find someone who can break the curse another way, but the thoughts inside you are asking me to tell you there is no other option. You want me to give you permission to move forward with the choice you’re trying to make. To release Reznor from the bond. To die so that he can live with a mate that your clan will approve of.
